To avoid financial loss, it is important to choose the solar panel with the right capacity and know the power produced. You can choose the right capacity of solar panels by knowing your daily energy consumption.

400 Watt Solar Panel A 400 Watt solar panel receiving 6 hours of sunlight can produce approximately 2.4 kWh (or 2 units) of electricity per day. A 500 watt solar panel can generate 2.5 to 3 units of electricity every day. A 1 kW solar power system can generate approximately 5 units of electricity every day. A 3 kW solar power system can generate about 15 units of electricity every day. A 5 kW solar system can generate approximately 25 units of electricity every day.

Know the factors that influence power generation from solar panels

Larger panels can generate more power. High-efficiency panels convert more sunlight into electricity. Different types of panels (e.g. monocrystalline, polycrystalline) have different efficiencies. Before installing a solar system, it is important to understand your home’s electrical load. This can be set via the electricity meter or the electricity bill. Calculate the annual electricity load, taking into account seasonal changes as electricity consumption increases in summer and winter. If your monthly power load is up to 300 units, a 2 kW solar system is good for your home. While if the average load of your house is up to 150 units, you can install a 1 kilowatt solar system.

Government subsidy for solar panels

The Government of India is promoting the installation of solar panels through programs like Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The aim of this initiative is to install solar panels on the roofs of 1 crore families to provide 300 units of free electricity every month. A subsidy of ₹30,000 is provided for a 1 kW system and a subsidy of ₹60,000 for a 2 kW system.

If you install a system of 3 kW or more (up to 10 kW), you will receive a subsidy of ₹78,000. This subsidy only applies to grid-based systems that do not use batteries and do not provide power backup. But through net metering we share electricity with the grid, so that we can send the extra electricity back to the grid.
