PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme has been launched with an investment of ₹75,000 crore allocated in the interim budget of 2024. Under this scheme, solar panels will be installed on the roofs of houses of 1 crore families. In addition, these families receive 300 units of free electricity every month. To benefit from this scheme, the consumer must submit an application and once approved, a subsidy is provided that allows the installation of solar panels at a low cost.

The scheme offers subsidies for solar energy systems with a capacity ranging from 1 kW to 10 kW. To receive the subsidy, an off-grid solar energy system must be installed that shares the electricity generated by the panels with the grid. Electricity from the mains is used to power all appliances and a net meter has been installed in the solar system to calculate the shared electricity. This system helps a lot in reducing the electricity bill.

Solar subsidy requirements

Plenty of space on the roof to install a solar system, such as 10 square meters for a 1 kW solar panel. To obtain the consumer number, it is necessary to have a valid electricity bill. Before solar panels are installed, the required electrical load of the home must be known. Solar energy equipment must be purchased through a solar energy supplier registered with the state DISCOM.
